Other Plants

Starch resources

  • Potatoes, millet, sweet potatoes, wheat, chestnuts, rice, barley, sorghum, corn, Indian millet.

Oil resources

  • The oil produced from oilseed crops includes cooking oils and essential oils. The oil in plants is mostly stored in seeds and other organs, are compounds of fatty acids and glycerol, and refer to vegetable oil. Vegetable oils can be divided into saturated, monounsaturated, and multiple unsaturated fats, according to the degree of saturation. Higher unsaturated oils oxidize faster and dry easier. A representative oil resource showing these characteristics is flaxseed oil, a fiber resource. One vegetable oil with the features of saturated oil is palm oil, collected from palm tree fruit, which is used for frying because it has dysoxidative features, even at high temperatures. Monounsaturated and multiple unsaturated vegetable oils include artificial antioxidants or are reduced to make saturated fat to improve preservation, although trans fat is also produced during these processes. As sesame oil has its own antioxidant, its long-term storage at room temperature is allowed. Soybean oil is the resource with the highest production in the world. There are also palm, rapeseed, sunflower, cottonseed, and olive oils.
  • Perilla, peanut, castor bean, olive, rapeseed, sesame, sunflower

Recreation resources

  • A recreation resource refers to plants that are not essential for nutrition in daily life but are used as raw materials or tea, tobacco, and liquor for relaxation or mental stimulation.
A common feature in plants used for beverages is caffeine. Plants containing caffeine have been used independently on three different continents. Tea in China, coffee in Africa and the Middle East, and cacao in the New World are called Theaceae, Rubiaceae, and Sterculiaceae, respectively. Caffeine has a stimulant effect and has been used as a beverage for mental stimulation, and is found in kola nuts and yerba mate. Other recreational plants such as tobacco contain nicotine instead of caffeine, and hops have been used as a preservative for beer for long time.
  • Tobacco, Gynostemma pentaphyllum, Citrus junos, tea, chicory, cacao, coffee, hops

Sugar resources

  • Sweet sorghum, beets, sugar cane, stevia.

Dye resources

  • Various plants have been used as dyes for coloring textiles, from physical dying to using a mordant agent. Red dyes include Madder and blue dyes include membranous layer and indigo. Although various metallic salts are used as mordant fixing dye for fibers, plants containing these metallic salts, such as club moss, lichens, or cocoons of oak tree or lacquer tree containing tannin are also used.

Spice/perfume resources

  • Spice generally refers to a plant cultivated in a tropical zone, and various parts of these plants, including roots, fruit, bark, and leaves are used. By comparison, herbs are plants mainly cultivated in Europe or the Mediterranean, are included in Libiatae, Umbelliferae, and Compositae, and have aromatic properties. Their leaves are mainly used. Representative tropical spices include cinnamon, pepper, nutmeg, cloves, turmeric, allspice, and vanilla. In addition, plants used as herbs include lavender, rosemary, basil, oregano, sage, and mint. Other spices used in many countries include chili peppers, ginger, mustard, and wasabi.
