Guide to Arboretum plants
It is targeted to gradually create a digital database of 200,000 plants with information possessed by every arboretum and botanical garden, and at present about 100,000 have been put into the database.
Requirements of the plant specimen database
For plant species possessed out of their
natural habitat (ex-situ), it is possible to use a listing by
organization as a method for monitoring the plant resource possession
status of arboretums and botanical gardens responsible for the
conservation of plant resources, including collection and
proliferation of plant species, and the items below are required:
- Lack of confidence in retained plant species information
- Exchange of plant resource information
- Information requests for supporting utilization of plant resources
- Information support for preservation of rare and endemic plants
- Understanding inflow and outflow of plant resources
Purposes for establishment of plant database
A plant database is established to allow search by organization, collection year, and plant taxa to be utilized for the following purposes:
- To connect the geographical information of plant sites with the arboretum's information and display their cultivation status on a map
- To permanently preserve plant possession by image digitalization, and maximize availability by providing video data
- To establish a research foundation for plant taxonomy, biology, and plant resource research
