Industrial Resource

Insects as an industrial resource

  • Due to their great sensory organs and unique structural features, insects have high industrial availability for biometrics, large-scale integration sensors, intelligent robots, and as detecting insects.
  • Insects also produce useful substances that help mankind, including the production of silk, silkworm powder, and pupae from silkworms, and the production of royal jelly, honey and propolis, which is called a miracle medicine, from the honey bee.
  • Recently, insects have been used for chitin extraction from crabs, shrimp and other insects, to produce fishing lures, and to dispose of livestock effluent.
Furthermore, crickets and mealworms are used as animal food, and insect hormones and pheromones, the physiologically active ingredients of insects, are currently being studied.
