Many insect species have begun to disappear in recent years due to environmental degradation caused by urbanization and industrialization. In Korea, the government is taking actions, such as the establishment of relevant laws, to protect them, and active protection is required with the consensus of the nation’s people. The destruction of the ecosystem means useful genetic and biological resources will be lost, and also the loss of a pleasant habitat to live in. Therefore, it is an essential task for the survival of humanity to reduce damage caused by indiscreet development and to preserve biological resources.
According to Article 2, Paragraph 2 of the Wild Animal/Plant Protection Act, endangered wild animals/Class I plants are animals/plants facing extinction due to natural or artificial causes. This includes five species, such as Prosopocoilus astacoides, Polyphylla laticollis, Aporia crataegi, and Eumenis autonoe, as well as Korea’s native insect, Callipogon relictus.
