Cultural Resource

Insects as a cultural resource

  • In Korea, it was considered that Colias erate and Papilio xuthus were signs of good luck, and in the fall, people enjoyed the sound of Velarifictorus asperses and Hexacentrus japonicas.
In Egypt, Gymnopleurus mopsus was regarded as a god, and in “Aesop’s Fables,” many insects are personified to teach humans.
  • Recently, a new field of study called cultural entomology emerged with a systematic study about this. Insects are also used as materials in the arts and movies, attracting the audience’s attention, and the sentimental benefits that insects have supports new activities such as the dissemination of pet insects centering on insect enthusiasts.
In Japan, the size of the insect pet market is close to $200 million dollars.
