What is the Korean Plant Names Index?
Definition of the Korean Plant Names Index (KPNI)
The Korean Plant Names Index (KPNI) is a database of the names and associated basic
bibliographical details of all Korean vascular plants. Its goal is to eliminate the need for repeated
reference to primary sources for basic bibliographic information about plant names.
The data are freely available and are gradually being standardized and checked. KPNI will be a
dynamic resource, depending on direct contributions by all members of the botanical
community.
It is always arranging new plant names with process of the careful discussion, and confirmation
by committee. This is the result of a collaboration with Korea National Arboretum, Plant
Taxonomic Society of Korea, National Plant List Committee and Cultivated Plant List Committee.
Characteristics and use of the Korean Plant Names Index (KPNI)
-The Foundation dataset for plant information of Korea.
-The authoritative plant name and citation infrastructure in Korea
-A tool for the botanists that deals with plant names, not only those in current use, but also
those names used in the past ? synonyms no longer in use for a variety of technical
nomenclatural reasons. It includes information on names in current use, plant name changes,
previous names for a renamed plant, the journal or place where the name was formally
published, the author of the plant name; additional references, and relevant comments and
otes on the naming process.
-KPNI provides access to comprehensive botanical information on-line to everybody as
attached files, accessible through KPNI.
